can someone give me some ideas on some pretty , colorful, flowers i cn use in a front flower bed that will wk well with the heat and sun?

Reply:This what I did since I live in NC and it is getting hotter every year.I got so tired Of spending Hundreds of dollars planting flowers then the sun cooks them I went to wal mart and both fake flowers that%26#039;s about the cheapest place I know of now my flower beds look so nice and colourful and I don%26#039;t have to water or feed them and every 2 weeks I spray amoral on them and good as new plus I get 5 years out of them before they lose there colors.
Reply:Plants of the Portulaca genus do really well in hot full sun, especially if the soil is dry and sandy (although they do need some water occasionally!). Portulaca grandiflora (Moss Rose, Sun Plant) is an annual (or perennial in frost-free climates) which has green succulent leaves and spectacular flowers in pinks, yellows, reds, white, orange etc. Sow seed in Spring where you want it to flower and allow about 6 inches between plants. Full sun is best as their flowers only open when the sun shines on them.





Try also Portulaca oleracea (also known as Purslane). Comes in green or golden varieties. Likes the same conditions as Portulaca grandiflora, but has larger leaves and tiny yellow flowers. However, you can eat this one: young leaves are tasty in salads (crisp, juicy, slightly acidic) and you can cook them too (they contain mucilage so they cook down like okra, sort of thick and gummy). Seeds of Portulaca easily available at garden centres, nurseries or mail order (try Ebay too!).





As well as these, try almost any desert plant or succulent plant as these are adapted to hot, sunny dry locations. Many have spectacular flowers too.
